Meditation has tons of health benefits. It can help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and facilitate weight loss. Spend five minutes a day focusing on your breath, and you will reap those benefits. It can be hard to get started, but once you start meditating regularly, you’ll find it easier and easier. You can even start increasing the amount of time you spend meditating as you grow more comfortable with it. To get you going, we’ve put together this meditation guide for absolute beginners. Trust us, you’ll become hooked!
1. Set aside five minutes a day.
Make meditation a part of your daily routine. Dedicate five minutes every day to meditation. You don’t have to choose the same time every day, but make sure you choose time. You can use part of your lunch break, take a five-minute break from work, or wake up five minutes earlier and center yourself.
2. Find a quiet spot.
Any quiet place is a good place to meditate. Find somewhere where you will have no interruptions, and turn off your cellphone. If you really feel like you need a bit of background music to help stay focused, these meditation songs may just do the trick.
2. Close your eyes.
It’s easier to draw your attention inward when your eyes are closed.
3. Focus on your breath.
Breathe in, breathe out, and feel your breath as it moves through your body. If it helps, you can mentally say, “inhale, exhale,” “in, out,” or “expand, release.” Your mind will wander, and that’s OK! When it does, just bring your attention back to your breath. The more comfortable you get with meditation, the less your mind will wander.
4. Try guided meditation.
Guided meditation is a great tool – it can really help your focus. Many yoga classes offer it, and there are even meditation apps! Try Headspace or Mindful Meditation if you want a guide.
