Nutella Banana Espresso Shake

Get ready to have a new favorite breakfast shake! This Nutella Banana Espresso Shake is the perfect way to start your day. It contains the perfect balance of caffeine from the espresso, sweetness from the banana, and nutty goodness from the Nutella. And, before you start thinking about how unhealthy Nutella is: You don’t have to use the store-bought stuff. We’ll let you in on a little secret that reduces the sugar content of your Nutella, delivering full-flavored hazelnut spread without any of the extra stuff.

Since our Nutella Banana Espresso Shake only contains four ingredients (plus ice), this shake is also an incredibly economical way to start your day. Most of the ingredients are pantry staples, so you can whip up this breakfast at a moments notice. Talk about perfect for those busy mornings when you don’t have time to drink a cup of coffee and eat breakfast!

Do You Have to Use Espresso?

One of the major ingredients in this Nutella Banana Espresso Shake is espresso, so you might be asking what you can do if you don’t have an espresso machine. It’s not all that uncommon…after all, I actually own one at my house! Maybe it was living in the Pacific Northwest for all those years, or maybe it’s my growing desire for the blackest, bitterest coffee available on the planet. No matter the reason, I just love, love, love a shot of double espresso in the morning! I’m especially into the flavor when I add it to my morning breakfast shake.

If you do happen to have an espresso machine, it’s super easy to make this Nutella Banana Espresso Shake. Just brew up a double shot and toss it into the blender. Easy, peasy! You can still make this if you don’t have one, though, so never fear! Espresso powder is perfect for baking, so why not use it for making a breakfast shake? We really like this King Arthur Espresso Powder. Or, you could totally substitute 1/4 cup of strong brewed coffee and it will still taste great. Your choice!

Make Your Own Nutella

As it turns out, it’s super easy to make your own Nutella, too. Who needs the store-bought stuff when you can make a skinnier version at home? Our recipe blends hazelnuts, clean-eating chocolate chips, coconut milk, and honey. The result is a refined-sugar free, dairy-free hazelnut spread that tastes just as good as the sugary stuff you can find at the store. It’s great for spreading on toast, but it’s especially good for this clean-eating Nutella Banana Espresso Shake.

Which brings us to the last secret ingredient of the shake: A frozen banana. If you don’t have time to freeze the banana, the shake will still taste great with a room-temperature banana. But there’s something magical about the way that the frozen banana melds with the ice to create a slushy treat. Give it a try and let us know in the comments if you think it was worth taking the time to freeze the banana!

We can’t wait for you to try our new favorite breakfast treat. Let us know if you have any questions about ingredient substitutions or nutritional content. We love hearing from you and answering your questions!
